Heavy snowfall plunges Naples into chaos

NAPLES - This southern port city was plunged into chaos Tuesday after a freak snowstorm, which followed a similar rare event in Rome.

Naples was hit by a heavy snowfall Monday night, causing severely disrupted transport services and the closure of schools. Departing and arriving flights at Capodichino airport have been cancelled, buses are out of action because of “security reasons due to adverse weather conditions,”, and some metro lines have been closed. These disruptions have also reduced services between Naples and Rome.

The inaccurate weather forecast meant that until last night, the closure of schools had not been ordered. The school department has expressed its frustration saying “in contrast to the directions the bulletin of the civil protection, a copious snowfall whitewashed the city.” However, Annamaria Palmieri, the city councillor for schools has commented: "we are sure that this update to new and unexpected conditions is a responsible act."

The Civil Protection Council have advised people to avoid travel and movement unless absolutely necessary, in order “to protect the safety of adults and children.”
