Journalists to protest at Maltese Embassy

Daphne Caruana Galizia

ROME - This coming Monday, journalists from the Federation of Italian Press will protest at the Maltese Embassy in Piazza Nicosia. The demonstration, running from 10-11:30am, is against the impunity with which crimes against journalists is often treated.

The Maltese Embassy is being targeted due to the recent assassination of journalist, Daphne Caruana Galizia, in a car bomb. Caruana Galizia was very critical of corruption in the Maltese political body, including courts and police, as well as organised crime.

Reactions about the news of Caruana Galizia, including a police sergeant who expressed glee at her death, have exacerbated doubts that the Maltese authorities will earnestly investigate her murder. The protest is an effort to show solidarity with those journalists who have been injured or killed in an effort to do their jobs, especially those who are failed by the authorities who were supposed to protect them.
