Juventus fan dies following Turin stampede

TURIN-  Thirty-eight year old Juventus supporter, Erika Pioletti, has died in hospital following serious injuries sustained in the chaos that swept through the city’s Piazza San Carlo on the evening of the Champions League final.

Pioletti was one of 30,000 thousand football fans that had gathered in the square Saturday June 3, to watch the heavyweight UCL final clash between Juventus and and eventual winners Real Madrid.

However, panic erupted in the crowd when fans misconstrued the sounds of firecrackers for a potential terrorist attack and desperately tried to evacuate the square, causing chaos.

More than 1500 people were injured after being trampled or bruised in the rush to escape the square, although most injuries were not serious.

Erika, who had gone to watch the game with her boyfriend, was crushed against a wall and the compression of her rib cage triggered a heart attack, resulting in brain damage and consequently entering into a coma, Italian media say.

Sadly, the Turin council and Juventus F.C confirmed in seperate statements that Erika had died Thursday evening.

"Juventus Football Club would like to express its sincere condolences for the death of Erika. The events that took place in Turin and the city's victims of the tragedy on 3 June remain in the hearts and minds of all involved with the club,” read a statement from Juventus.

Similarly, Turin Mayor Chiara Appendino tweeted her message of support: “Every word is too much. On behalf of myself and the city I express my condolences for the death of Erika, it will be announced a day of mourning.”

The council is run by the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement, who have been criticised for the lack of organisation in the square that night.

Former Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, said: “What will happen will weigh on those both directly and indirectly responsible.”
