PISA- A failed heist at a jewellers on via Battelli ended with blood after the shop’s owner, Daniele Ferritti, 69, took matters into his own hands by shooting dead one of the armed robbers, local police sources said.

The attack took place early Tuesday evening in the centre of the historic town of Pisa, just as Ferritti was about to close up his jewellery shop.

Initial reports state that Ferritti only took out his weapon after the armed robbers threatened his wife, who was also in the shop.

Having pulled out his pistol Ferritti calmly ordered the men to leave before one of them opened fire on his wife, missing her, provoking the shop owner to fire shots of his own, killing one of the men.

It is believed that another two men fled the scene after the shots were fired.

Ferritti told police that it is not the first time opportunist thieves have attempted to rob his shop in, with the last incident happening last year.

Police also stated that they have found the car believed to be belonging to the robbers, a grey Fiat Panda left in a car park opposite the jewellers. Forensic tests are now being carried out on the vehicle in an attempt to indentify the dead man and his potential accomplices.

Matteo Salvini, leader of the far-right Lega Nord party, praised the actions of Ferritti for defending himself.

“Pisa, a little while ago a jeweller responded to an umpteenth robbery, he shoots and kills one of the thieves. Solidarity with Daniele Ferriti, a 69-year-old worker: he did well,” wrote Salvini on his Facebook page.
