Anti-mafia commissioner refuses Riina's request

Rosy Bindi

ROME - Rosy Bindi, president of the Anti-Mafia commission stated on Tuesday that former Casa Nostra boss Toto Riina’s right to die with dignity was largely assured, refuting the need for him to be granted permission to finish out his days under house arrest. The commisioners comments were made during a visit to the Maggiore di Parma hospital where he is being treated.

Other members of the Anti-Mafia commission joined Bindi at the hospital where Riina is being treated, under 41 bis regime.

This visit comes following comments from the Supreme Court of Cassation stating that he had right to die with dignity.

“Riina benefits from treatment and assistance, making his situation identical if not better to the one he could expect if freed or under house arrest," said Bindi.

The Anti-Mafia commissioner stated these conditions “largely assure first his right to a dignified life and also to a dignified death, except if one wants to postulate a right to die outside prison which is not recognized by the law.”

Rosy Bindi also argued that Riina remains the head of Cosa Nostra and a mafioso : “He is in a position to understand and decide, and has never expressed any sign of repentance.”

“He is in a wheelchair, eats without help and is surrounded by assistance at all times.”
