Secret video released of murdered student Regeni

The footage shows the Italian student talking to President of street sellers' trade union

ROME – A video has been broadcasted Monday of Giulio Regeni, the Italian Cambridge student who was murdered Jan. 25, 2016, whilst on a research trip in Egypt, in which Regeni is talking to Mohamed Abdallah, head of the street sellers’ trade union, and rejects Abdallah’s request for money.

The video was filmed using a micro-camera from the Cairo police hidden in one of Abdallah’s shirt buttons. Regeni was undertaking doctoral research on trade unions, a controversial subject in Egypt.

The Italian was asked to donate money to Abdallah, who claims in the video, “My wife has cancer and must have an operation and I need money.” Regeni rejects the plea, saying he cannot use his money for personal uses, only academic.

However, the Cambridge student then asks for information regarding trade unions, asking, “What is the the most important thing for you as regards the trade union and what are the union's needs?” in basic Arabic. He adds, “We must try and get information and gain ideas before the month of March.”
