Thousands mourn Italian woman murdered in Berlin attack

The funeral at Sulmona cathedral

SULMONA - Thousands of people attended the emotional funeral Monday of Fabrizia di Lorenzo, the young Italian woman murdered in the vicious Berlin lorry attack as Italian authorities remain on heightened alert for possible Isis revenge attacks following the killing of Tunisian terrorist Anis Amris by Italian police in Milan.

The Duomo at the town of Sulmona in the rugged Abruzzo region was packed with mourners from dawn on St Stephen’s day  as relatives and well wishers thronged to pay tribute to the 31-year-old killed in the Christmas market attack in Germany. Italian President Sergio Mattarella travelled to Sulmona to attend the solemn service together with the Interior Minister Marco Minniti.

Stepped up anti-terror measures in Rome include deployment of paratroopers and armoured personnel carriers blocking access to the Colosseum where crowds of tourists flock to enjoy Boxing Day,

Italian police from Digos anti-terrorist department were meanwhile perusing CCTV footage of Milan, Turin and Sesto San Giovanni train stations to try and determine if Amra made contact with members of a Jihadist support network in Italy before he was shot and killed.

Officers also were trying to determine whether 0.22 calibre pistol he had with him was the same one used to kill the Polish lorry driver in Berlin.

Amris may have been trying to reach a Mosque in Milan known by police to be a centre for false documents, police sources said.
