First Italian woman ISIS fighter sentenced to prison

Italy's 'female Jihad' who joined ISIS in Syria, later convincing family to join too.

 MILAN – Italian foreign fighter, Maria Giulia ‘Fatima’ Sergio, was sentenced to nine years in prison by a Milan Court Monday for terrorism.

 Sergio, 29, is believed to be in Syria, where she has been a combatant for the Islamic State (ISIS) extremist group since 2014.

 Her father was sentenced to four years in prison and her husband, Albanian national Aldo Kobuzi, was sentenced by the same court for a period of 10 years.

 Sergio’s sister was tried separately and sentenced to five years and four months.

 The family, all converts to the Islamic faith, were arrested in July 2015 when prosecutors said they and seven other suspects had joined ISIS and were on the verge of leaving to fight in Syria.

 The mother, Assunta Buonfiglio, died of a cardiac arrest aged 60 in Octover 2015, on the eve of her release.

 Monday’s sentence was the first in Italy to be handed to a foreign fighter still in the combat zone.
