Mayor of Milan resigns as Marra arrested for 'corruption'

Giuseppe Sala

MILAN -- Mayor of this northern city Giuseppe Sala resigned Friday due to his name being included on list for the Milan Expo corruption investigation, while Roman mayor Virginia Raggi’s right-hand man Raffaele Marra is arrested on corruption charges.

The mayor of Milan and former CEO of the 2015 Universal Exposition in Milan from June 2010 to Dec. 2015 Giuseppe Sala has announced his own suspension from his mayoral duties on learning about his feature on the list of those being investigated for the Milan Expo corruption scandal.

When announcing his resignation, Sala said that he learnt “from journalistic sources that I was on the list of those being investigated in the Expo investigation. Despite not having the slightest idea about the hypotheses of the investigation, I have decided to suspend myself from my role as mayor.”

Lega Nord politician Matteo Salvini instead thinks Raggi should resign -- “the Milanese deserve clarity. We are not asking for the Sala to resign -- if he has a clean conscience, let him carry on full-time as mayor and work, if he has a dirty conscience, then he should resign. An investigation does not always mean a sentence. The situation in Rome is something else -- there the only thing for it is immediate elections, because in six months the Five Star Movement have got through a ridiculous amount.”

In the capital, Five Star Movement politician Raffaele Marra, formerly appointed as vice-head of cabinet Raggi’s council and subsequently moved to head of personnel, has been arrested on corruption charges for allegedly using public money for his own private expenses.

The ANAC anti-corruption authority and Rome’s public prosecutors are also investigating the allegations against Raffaele’s brother Renato Marra, in the government’s department in charge of promoting tourism.

Authorities are undertaking searches of the Campidoglio Roman city hall, but mayor Raggi said she has nothing to hide.

This is another major blow for Raggi's credibility -- following ex-Environment Councillor Paola Muraro’s resignation earlier this week due to investigations into her -- as the radical Five Star Movement came to power on a platform of honesty and transparency in government. Hence, this can be read as a victory for former PM Matteo Renzi and his Democratic Party.
