Anarchists protest against 'gentrification' of Turin

The sophisticated Lavazza coffee bar in Borgo Aurora was certainly not welcomed by some.

TURIN -- Anarchists sprayed the exterior of Il Coffee Corner Lavazza bar black Sunday night in a protest against the gentrification of the area, almost completely covering the windows with varnish in a public demonstration similar to that of the Cereal Killer Café in Shoreditch, England, back in 2015.

The vandalism can be connected to the protest against the urban requalification of Borgo Aurora, a historical district of the city, and the numerous evictions from houses in the area.

The popular zone is now full of up-market companies and schools, seen to be causing the gentrification of the residential zone -- the rising property and rent prices have left those less affluent with no choice but to move to more affordable quarter.

On Nov. 28 this year, four anarchists were arrested for violence and nine received the ‘Prohibition of Residence’ from Turin for their attempts to block evictions from the same area.
