Mother "wants justice done" for brain-damaged child

The full extent of the damage done to the child, now 17-months old, will not be known until he reaches 5-years-old.

CATANIA -- The mother of the youngster born July 2015 in the ‘Santo Bambino’ hospital claims she “wants justice” for the damage done to her child after two female doctors at the end of their shift allegedly refused her a caesarean section, resulting in the child being born with brain damage.

The family lawyer, Gianluca Firrone, has explained that the mother, known to the press only as Deborah, aged 24, has blocked her Facebook profile and refused interviews, wanting to keep the case as private as possible.

Firrone said, “The family does not want publicity, but wants the truth, and therefore would appreciate the utmost discretion and respect for their privacy.”

The lawyer described the 2015 incident briefly, saying, “The patient asked numerous times for help from the medical team, and even her mother urged doctors to intervene and call a caesarean section as her daughter was clearly very ill.”

When the operation was finally carried out, long after alarm bells were first sounded, it was evident that something was wrong with the new-born: “The child was cyanotic blue, and was in a critical condition. The damage done is enormous, and the extent cannot be fully known until the infant turns five years old.”

The woman, who lives with her unemployed 33-year-old husband on the slopes of Etna, does not want a flood of media attention around the story. The family live ‘protected’ by their family and close friends, as lawyer Firrone said, “They want the child to live as normal a life as possible, even if medical expenses are considerable. Their love for him is immense, but so is the pain they suffer. For this reason, the priority of the mother is to prevent this situation from ever happening again.”
