Egypt prosecutor says justice will be brought to Regeni case

Giulio Regeni, the murdered university researcher

ROME -- The Egyptian public prosecutor Nabil Ahmed Sadek told the parents of the murdered university researcher Giulio Regeni, that the case will not be closed until justice is brought about, in a meeting in the capital for Italian investigators, judicial sources said Wednesday.

“The happenings that we are investigating are tragic and my task is that of not closing the investigations until the culprits are arrested. Giulio was a bringer of peace,” said the public prosecutor Nabil Ahmed Sadek to Claudio and Paola Regeni, the parents of the deceased Cambridge University researcher, during the meeting at the via Guido Reni police school Tuesday.

Sadek also expressed his own condolences, as well as those of the Egyptian people and institutions, to the Regeni couple, whose son was kidnapped Jan. 25, 2016 in Egypt during a research trip, and subsequently murdered between January and February 2016 -- his body was found Feb. 3 in a ditch on the side of a motorway near Cairo.

Paola and Claudio Regeni know how much their son loved the Arab world and its culture, and were said to have appreciated the public prosecutor’s gesture.

The meeting in Rome Tuesday was centred around an exchange of information between prosecutors -- the Roman prosecutor Giuseppe Pignatone was present as well as his deputy Sergio Coaliocco.

Another session is underway Wednesday morning, after which a public statement will be released.
