Search back on for lost mountaineers

The search for the group of expert mountaineers began Saturday evening, three were members of a mountain rescue squad themselves

BOLZANO -- Weather conditions in the South Tyrol region have improved in the early hours of Wednesday morning and so the search starts up again for the two mountaineers lost over the weekend in Val Vizze, on the glacier of Gran Vedretta at 2,600 metres.

They are Ulrich Seebacher and Andreas Zoeggeler, both 41-years-old from the South Tyrol region. Tracks have not been found for the pair since an avalanche recently took the lives of two other mountaineers from the same group, 41-year-old Thomas Lunn and 44-year-old Peter Vigl, them themselves members of a mountain rescue squad, who were found lifeless on Sunday at the foot of the rocks.

Emergency alarms fist sounded for the lost group on Saturday night at around 23:30. The four men were expert mountaineers and climbers.

On Wednesday morning, a rescue team returned to the location to resume the search, whilst a helicopter search is underway setting off from Pontives in val Gardena with special electronic equipment to seek out the location of mobile phones, hoping to track any signals from the lost pair.

The search has been expanded from the point where Lunn and Vigl were found. According to rescue services, however, the hope of finding someone still alive is extremely limited.
