Veteran climbers fall to their death

The pair were to tackle the challenging via Deffeyes

CERVINO  -- The bodies of two experienced Al pine climbers have been recovered, Friday, following their plummet to the rocks from the cliff-side of the Matterhorn, Alpine rescue workers report.

The bodies of Ottavio Gérard and Joel Déanoz were found by helicopter searches on Friday morning, following their departure on Thursday evening to commence the route up via Deffeyes, considered one of the most challenging routes of the Matterhorn.

Lucio Trucco, responsible for alpine rescue within the zone, claimed, “the mountain conditions were optimum and the two victims were well prepared and well trained.” It is probable that the pair fell due to falling rocks from the cliff-side.

The bodies have been transported to Aosta.
