Fires break out across the capital

Fires break out at three points in Rome

ROME -- Three fires have broken out on Tuesday around the capital, firefighters said. The first began on the road between the capital and Fiumicino, with the other two breaking out at the Parco del Pineto and on the Monte Mario hill.

The first fire began by the Parco Leonardo on Tuesday morning, and quickly spread to the A91 between Rome and Fiumicino, leading to part of the road being closed, firefighters reported. The capital’s road information organisation, Luceverde, said on twitter that the closure is “between the airport and the GRA junction from kilometre eight to kilometre 14 in the direction of Rome.”

A fire has also broken out near the Parco del Pineto on Via Aurelia, where three fire engines and the Civil Defence are dealing with the flames. Via Damiano Chiesa, also near the Parco del Pineto, has also been affected by the fire, where four teams and two Civil Defence helicopters are present.

A precautionary evacuation is taking place for elderly people in the Via Damiano Chiesa area who are put at risk by the fire.

The Flames have also spread to the area surrounding the Forte Braschi building.

A third fire has also broken out on the Monte Mario hill, close to the Parco del Pineto, where three firefighting teams and two Civil Defence helicopters are on site. According to the firefighters, the nearby area is made up of largely dry and bushy terrain. No local residents have yet been evacuated in this area.

According to Il Messaggero newspaper, there is a “critical situation in the Lazio region concerning the outbreak of numerous fires which are starting in dry forest areas on the outskirts of the main cities.”
