RAI's New Year's Eve swearing slated by Vatican

As well as the swearing, the countdown was also early

ROME - RAI’s New Year’s Eve show “L’anno che verra” (“The coming year”) has been slated for toasting in the New Year 40 seconds early, revealing a spoiler for the new Star Wars movie, and blasphemy, signs of a TV “out of control”, according to the Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano.

According to the Vatican newspaper, the 'human error' failure to filter the text messages aired on the show is "considered irrelevant."

RAI has since apologised to viewers for the phrase "Porco Dio" on the texts, a swear word in Italian. “With regard to the seriously offensive message displayed during the live broadcast, RAI apologises to all viewers. Since, the manager has been immediately suspended by the company.

The mistakes have caused uproars, particularly over social media networks, such as Twitter. The Northern League member Gianmarco Cento has highlighted how shameful the show was, and has requested a parliamentary debate on the matter. Director of RAI1 did all he could to lighten the tone, writing “we knew that Rai was ahead, but we did not realise quite so much!”, in reference to the faulty time-keeping.

The first part of the evening was watched by 5,565,000 viewers.
