Pope to meet Castro in Cuba

The pope may meet Fidel Castro in his upcoming Cuban visit

ROME — During Pope Francis’ upcoming visit to the United States, the final stop of which will be in Cuba, it is highly probable that he will meet up with Fidel Castro.

It is expected that this encounter will occur during a day spent in the capital of Cuba, Havana.

“It is not currently in the agenda, but it is possible that it may happen” said Father Federico Lombardi, current director of the Holy See Press Office. “We will have to look into when and how to go about doing it.”

The Vatican spokesperson also added that “the desire for the meeting between the pontiff and Fidel Castro was also expressed by the current president of Cuba, Raúl Castro, during his meeting with the pope at the Vatican.”
