Crowd trouble mars historic Torino win

ROME – Against all the odds, Torino emerged victorious from their fixture against local rival Juventus, for the first time in 20 years on Sunday. However, unsavoury scenes both before and during the match, left several fans with injuries and led to multiple arrests.

According to reports from local police, nine Torino supporters were injured by splinters from seats after a paper bomb, thrown by away fans, exploded mid way through the first half. A further fan was hurt following a parallel incident, which occurred at the end of the game.

Reports indicate that the paper bombs were thrown in response to projectiles aimed at Bianconeri fans seated in the away end, and there were similar scenes outside the ground in the lead up to the game. Torino supporters aimed eggs, bottles and rocks at the Juventus team coach, breaking a window in the process.

“I can’t take this anymore. I’m sick of it,” said Giovanni Malago, President of the Italian Olympic Committee, to Gazetto dello Sport. “We’re going to seek severe punishments for those responsible.”

In stark contrast to off the field happenings, the match itself started in a fairly tame fashion. The expectant Juventus supporters had little to cheer for the opening half an hour however this changed thanks to a moment of class provided by Andrea Pirlo’s right boot. The Azzurri legend curled in a free kick from 25 yards off the underside of the bar, to give Juventus the lead on the 35-minute mark.

At this stage it would be fair to say that many home supporters feared the worst with their team a goal down having failed to register a victory against Juventus in two decades. However, derby matches are notoriously unpredictable and this proved to be the case once again.

Despite a first touch resembling the proverbial brick wall, to take him into the 18-yard box, Matteo Darmian was able to ghost past the Juventus defence and kept his cool to slot home the equaliser after 45 minutes. The Italian fullback was again involved as Torino completed an unlikely turnaround with a second goal 12 minutes after the break.  On this occasion Darmian turned provider with Quagliarella tapping in his accurate cross.

Juventus certainly had their chances to take more from the game however were unable to replicate their impressive form of recent weeks. Manager Massimiliano Allegri lamented his side’s inability to take their chances, having seen his players hit the woodwork three times.

“The team created a lot today and deserved more,” said Allegri to Sky Italia. “We needed to keep the ball more, in particular when we were ahead in the game.”

Despite this defeat, Juventus are still in a commanding position in Serie A. The Bianconeri are currently 14 points ahead of their nearest challengers Lazio with just six games remaining. This, in turn, means that depending on results elsewhere, Juventus could claim the title as early as Wednesday with a win against Fiorentina.
