Rome - An American student has passed away nearly three months after sustaining life-threatening injuries following a fall at Lungotevere dei Vallati.

Andrew Mogni, 20, was a student at the University of Iowa and had only been in Rome for a day when tragedy struck. According to reports in the Chicago Tribune the student, who had come to Italy to commence a term at John Cabot University in Trastevere, was injured on January 14, when he fell off the high wall, which lines the river in the centre of the city.

The University of Iowa said in a statement that they originally believed that the fall was accidental however it is now thought that Mogni could have been the victim of a robbery. Police in the Italian capital are continuing to investigate the incident.

Perhaps the most shocking part of these tragic events is the fact that Andrew Mogni’s death is by no means an isolated incident. In June 2013 another American student was killed after falling off a similar stretch of wall next to the Tiber whilst in 2009, a 19 year old Australian was found dead on a riverbank having taken part in an organised pub-crawl in the city.

These incidents have prompted police to crack down on pub-crawls around Rome as they encourage heavy and prolonged drinking sessions. However there have also been calls for authorities to introduce better protection along the river with netting and extra CCTV cameras, offering two potential ways to improve safety in the area.
