GIULIO ANDREOTTI DIES

Giulio Andreotti

ROME -- Former Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti died at his home in the Italian capital Monday, his family said. He was 94.

Andreotti, a life senator, was seven times prime minister and dominated post-war Italian politics at the head of his Christian Democrat party until it was swept away in the Clean Hands corruption scandal in 1992.

He governed Italy in close alliance with the Vatican and the United States and was accused by critics of masterminding much of the skullduggery used to prevent the Communist Party taking power.
