Earthquake of 4.1 magnitude hits northern Italy

 ROME – A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Friuli Venezia Giulia late on Wednesday night, the INGV seismic surveillance centre said.

 The epicentre was five kilometres south west of Socchieve, Udine, with an estimated depth of 12 kilometres. According to data from the INGV, the strongest tremors were felt in nearby villages of Ampezzo and Ovaro. 

 The earthquake began at 9:19 p.m., and the tremors were felt as far away as Trieste, located around 110 kilometres away. It was also reported that tremors were felt in Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, 140 kilometres from the epicentre.

 No one has been reported as seriously injured.

 Speaking to RAI news, the mayor of Socchieve, Coriglio Zannier said “we heard a tremendous bang […] and then the power went out for a few minutes.” He added that a few roof tiles fell, and that they “were scared” but now they “are getting back to normal.”
