Pisspoor transport in Rome during summer

ROME – During the summer period in Rome, most public transport will not be running, leaving tourists and locals alike unable to commute in the city.

There will be no trams running in Rome from May to the middle of October, due to expansion works at the Porta Maggiore depot. 121 more trams are expected to arrive in Rome before the Jubilee in 2025, but Porta Maggiore is currently not big enough to contain all the new vehicles. While the depot is expanded, there is no place to park the current trams and so all lines are suspended.

Closures and shortened running times also hit the metro, with Metro A’s last train running at 9 p.m. instead of 11:30 p.m. Two main touristic stations, Spagna and Ottaviano will also be closed over the summer for upgrade works. Cipro and San Giovanni will also be subject to works, but these two stations are expected to remain open. The total cost for the work on these four stations is 235 million euros.

These upgrade works come ahead of the Catholic Jubilee year in 2025, which will see millions of pilgrims descend upon the city.

Other trains services connecting areas of Lazio to the capital city are suspended. Roma-Viterbo FL3, which connects Bracciano, Tuscia and Anguillara is closed over the summer and the Roma Nord-Viterbo line stops running at 9 p.m., due to works on the tracks. Rome’s rail connection to the sea, the Roma-Lido line closed on March 5 for two years.
