Meloni and Fratelli d'Italia still lead public opinion in recent poll

Giorgia Meloni

ROME - Fratelli d’Italia are still leading in a recent opinion poll carried out by Euromedia Research for the ‘Porta a Porta’ programme, with 28% of those surveyed saying they would vote for Meloni's party. The Democratic Party polled in second place at 19.5%.

According to this poll, Fratelli d’Italia saw a slight increase in popularity, however both Lega and Forza Italia have seen a decrease in popularity. Lega polled at 8.4%, a loss of 0.6% since Jan 16, and Forza Italia came in at 7.5%.

Trailing behind Forza Italia is Azione at 4.3%, followed by Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra at 3.4%, Italia viva at 2.8% and +Europa at 2.5%.

The 5 Star Movement gained a point bringing them to 17.05%, meaning they are third place in the standings behind Fratelli d'Italia and the Democratic Party.

Euromedia Research pointed out that if there was an election held tomorrow a coalition between the 5 Star Movement and centre-left parties would not be that far behind the coalition of centre-right parties, coming in at 43.2% and 44.07% of the vote respectively.

However, a high number of respondents declared themselves undecided voters, making up 37% of those surveyed.

Euromedia Research then asked those surveyed whether they think current leaders should be their party’s frontrunner for office. One out of three respondents said they would be in favour of this hypothesis.

However, it varied along party lines. Around half of the Fratelli d’Italia voters (52.3%) and half of the Italia Viva voters agreed with the sentiment. Only 8.2% of Democratic Party voters would agree with Elly Schlein as leader, whereas over 20% of 5 Star Movement voters would back Giuseppe Conte.

Giorgia Meloni remains in first place on the trust index of party leaders, polling in at 39.3%, a slight decrease of 0.3% compared to the last survey on Jan 16. Antonio Tajani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, follows her at 31.4%. They are followed by Giuseppe Conte of the 5 Star Movement at 26.1%, Matteo Salvini of Lega at 24.8% and Elly Schlein of the Democratic Party at 21.4%. At the bottom of the pile, Carlo Calenda of Azione polled in at 15.15% followed by Matteo Renzi of Italia Viva at 11%.
