Italian tennis player, Sinner, makes history by reaching the Australian Open final

Jannik Sinner celebrates

ROME - Jannik Sinner has made history as he becomes the first Italian to reach the final of the Australian Open, after defeating defending champion Novak Djokovic in four sets.

Sinner defeated Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, ending the Serb’s six-year winning streak at the Australian Open. This is Sinner’s first time reaching a Grand Slam final, and he is only the fifth Italian man to do so.

In the post-match interview, Djokovic congratulated Sinner saying the Italian deserved a spot in the final and that he was “totally outplayed.”

After his win, Sinner wrote "buongiorno Italia" with a blue marker on the television camera's lens. Although it was 6:15 p.m. in Melbourne, the time read 8:15 a.m. in Italy.

The men’s singles final is on Sunday night, where Sinner will face either Medvedev or Zverev in an attempt to become the first Italian to take the trophy home.
