Chaos as goods train derails in Florence

FLORENCE – On Wednesday night a goods train wagon went off the tracks in Florence Castello. According to Trenitalia, high-speed, InterCity and regional trains may be subject to delays of up to 180 minutes, rerouting, cancellations and route restrictions.

After the derailment of the goods train, "the objective is to restore circulation by early afternoon," reads a Mit note. A replacement bus service is in operation between Florence and Prato.

The derailment reportedly caused elements of the railway to come down, including poles and pylons supporting the cables that supply power to the trains and the line. Rfi technicians are working on the repairs but, it is reported, it will take time to restore the line in the section between Firenze Castello and Prato.

The derailed train is part of a logistics company outside the FS group and is carrying a load of containers. Rete ferroviaria italiana (Rfi) said that the accident caused damage but no injuries.

At Rome's Termini station there are long queues and cancelled trains due to the derailment. It is reported that at the station's info point there are more than 600 people - waiting with a number in their hands to find out what solutions are in store for them. Turin, Milan, Brescia and Bolzano are just some of the destinations that are currently unreachable. Arrivals from some cities in the North have also been cancelled, and for others there is evidence of long delays.

In the central station of Milan there are also delays of up to two hours. “Circulation on the high-speed line will gradually resume from 12 noon,” is the announcement from the station loudspeakers.

In Naples and Bologna there is a similar situation for those arriving at or departing from the Central Station, due to delays and cancellations of high-speed trains. At the moment, two Frecciarossa trains departing from Turin and Milan are expected to arrive in the capital of Campania with delays of up to 215 minutes.
