Long jumper Larissa Iapichino, wins European Indoor silver medal, bettering her mum Fiona May's 1998 record

ISTANBUL - Larissa Iapichino won a silver medal in the long jump for the Europeans Athletics Indoor, holding a new personal and national record of 6.97 M, as much as 6 cm more than her mum, Fiona May. 

Iapichino, 20-year-old, daughter of the former British athlete Fiona May and the athletics coach Gianni Iapichino, notched up a new world record for the under-20 category, taking legendary Heike Drechsler’s world’s junior record of 6.91.

Iapichino positioned herself second, just after the British athlete Jasmine Sawyers, who set a personal record of 7.00 M, and ahead of Ivana Vuleta from Serbia with 6.91 M.

Fiona May, Iapichino’s mother, after switching her nationality from British to Italian held until now, the Italian Indoor long jump record of 6.91 M, which earned her the gold medal in Valencia at the European Indoors of 1998.
