Investigation underway into crane collapse that killed three

TURIN – Investigators are working to determine what fault led to the collapse of a crane on Saturday, killing three workers and injuring three others, police said. It is the latest of several recent construction incidents, which have resulted in 10 workers dead in three days.

The incident took place at a seven-storey building site in via Genova, in the Nizza Millefonti district of Turin. Of the three workers who lost their lives as they were up on the crane, Roberto Peretto, 52 and Marco Pozzetti, 54, both from Milan, died instantly. Filippo Falotico, just 20 years old from Turin, was declared dead a few hours after the accident in hospital.

Mirzad Svrka, 39, a construction worker from Turin, is in hospital, along with two passers-by who have not been unidentified - a 33-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman.

According to the provincial commander of the fire brigade, Agatino Carrolo, it appears "there was a failure at the base of the crane which led to the collapse of the reticular structure that was used for the maintenance of the facade.”

There are two manufacturers that were involved in the collapse. The first is the actual crane, supplied by Loca-Gru, while the second is the medium, from Calabrese, used for assembly. Technical investigators have theorised that the latter may have collapsed and fallen upon the other.

The workers belonged to a third company from the Milan area. According to an initial reconstruction, they were on the crane and fell from tens of meters high. One of them ended up under the concrete counterweight. The arm of the Calabrese vehicle broke in two, remaining however hooked to the base, and fell on the building opposite. The crane broke into four parts.
