Carabinieri find huge haul of Apulian treasures in Belgium

BARI - A collection of almost 800 pieces of "exceptional rarity and inestimable value" have been returned to Puglia from a collector in Belgium, thanks to an investigation by the Carabinieri's Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Comando Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale - TPC).

The collectio consists of 782 pieces including Apulian vases with red figures, amphorae, black-painted ceramics, indigenous and Attic ceramics decorated with geometrical and figurative paintings, stelae of ancient limestone, as well as numerous terracotta figures, all dating from the sixth to the third century BC.

The Carabinieri TPC have called it one of the most important discoveries for Puglia, as well as Italy.

The investigations were begun in 2017 after a report by the Restoration Laboratory at the Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape, and carried out by the Carabinieri TPC, in collaboration with Eurojust, European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation.
