 ROME – Two Brighton fans have been stabbed in Rome ahead of the clash with Roma in the Europa league on Thursday.

 Joey Thorpe, 27, was mugged and two of his friends, 28 and 29, were stabbed in the thigh on Via Monte Polacco, near Via Cavour, just after midnight on Thursday. The police were called after the two victims went into a nearby restaurant, asking for help.

 They had been attacked by six masked men who also stole their wallets and passports. The attackers have not yet been identified and any connection with Roma has not yet been confirmed.

 ROME – During the summer period in Rome, most public transport will not be running, leaving tourists and locals alike unable to commute in the city.

 There will be no trams running in Rome from May to the middle of October, due to expansion works at the Porta Maggiore depot. 121 more trams are expected to arrive in Rome before the Jubilee in 2025, but Porta Maggiore is currently not big enough to contain all the new vehicles. While the depot is expanded, there is no place to park the current trams and so all lines are suspended.

 VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis spoke out about sexual abuse of children in the Church during an audience with the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors on Thursday, the Vatican said.

 The pontiff focused on the need for safeguarding in the church and that the abuse scandals must be confronted. Speaking to members of a special commission for protection of minors, he said that “commitment must not wane” in the face of the “challenge of restoring the fabric of broken lives and of healing pain.”

 ROME – Visitors to Pompeii received a guided tour of the area from Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of the Archaeological Park of Pompei, sources said.

 A workers’ union meeting on Tuesday, which involved nearly all the workers at Pompeii, meant that the usual 9 a.m. opening time was delayed until 10:30 a.m. Only certain areas of the park were open until midday due to a lack of security.

 After 22 years the Foreign Press Association has moved out of its headquarters in Via dell’Umiltà, or Humility Street, a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, and will begin a new chapter at swank premises in the former apartment of the late media mogul Silvio Berlusconi in the Palazzo Grazioli next to Piazza Venezia.

 MADEIRA - Since my childhood I heard about my great grandfather Edmund Leacock, having a big home in Madeira and making wine. So when a friend suggested to me that we visit Madeira I was excited. Not only would I get to discover and enjoy a beautiful place but I could also dig a little to try to find out more about my ancestors.

 My father tells me his grandfather’s house was called Quinta da Casa Branca but he isn’t sure if it is still in the family.
