ROME–Multiple strikes by AMA, the company in charge of garbage collection in the capital, have brought the city virtually to its knees.
Many Romans have been complaining about reported waste collection problems in their neighbourhoods. In response, Roberto Alesse, the president of the Autorità di garanzia sugli scioperi (the authority controlling strikes), has written a letter to the AMA asking for the strikes, which are affecting job performance and therefore the well-being of citizens, to be explained.
“I am very tired and angry about the garbage situation,” said Ignazio Marino, the mayor of Rome. “It is true that we closed the Malagrotta landfill site, but now AMA needs to work better. I think it is time to blow some heads off. 18% of workers are constantly absent and it is unacceptable for employers not to do something about this.”
