Dream Shoes exhibition explores fashion, identity and craftsmanship in Rome

Rome– More than a fashion exhibition, Vanessa Noel – Dream Shoes offers visitors a journey through history, art and identity, exploring the cultural significance of footwear across centuries.

The exhibition, hosted at the Casa Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi from June 5 to Sept. 6, brings together creations by American designer Vanessa Noel alongside historic shoes from the Noel Shoe Museum in New York, highlighting the evolution of footwear as both an artistic expression and a social symbol.

Curated by Maria Giuseppina Di Monte, Giulia Innocentini and Luca Lo Sicco, the exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the Noel Shoe Museum and The American University of Rome, under the patronage of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana.

Through a carefully curated selection of designs spanning more than four decades of Noel's career, the exhibition examines the shoe not merely as a fashion accessory, but as an object imbued with historical, artistic and cultural meaning. Displayed within the elegant surroundings of the museum, Noel's contemporary creations enter into dialogue with historical footwear, creating a narrative that bridges past and present.

The exhibition presents shoes as symbols of authority and power, instruments of emancipation and freedom, and witnesses to technological innovation and artistic creativity. In doing so, it invites visitors to reflect on how footwear has shaped social roles, personal identity and collective imagination throughout history.

American designer Vanessa Noel, long recognised for promoting Italian craftsmanship in the United States, is also celebrated for founding the first shoe museum in the U.S. Her work has consistently championed the artistic and cultural value of footwear while promoting the excellence of Made in Italy abroad.

The exhibition's title, Dream Shoes, encapsulates the idea that shoes can tell stories about the individuals who wear them. The notion that "tell me what shoes you wear, and I will tell you who you are" serves as a central theme throughout the exhibition, encouraging visitors to consider the relationship between fashion and self-representation.

Aimed at a broad and diverse audience, with particular attention to younger generations, the exhibition seeks to combine education with engagement, tradition with contemporary creativity.

With this initiative, the Casa Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi reaffirms its role as a centre for research and the promotion of fashion, decorative arts and applied arts, offering a space where aesthetics and history meet in meaningful dialogue.
