Italy breaks record with 30 overall medals in Milan-Cortina Olympics

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO --Italy has set an incredible record in the 2026 home Milan-Cortina winter Olympics with 10 gold medals and 30 medals overall with women leading the charge. They have surpassed all records set in the Lillehammer ‘94 games.
Some notable female medalists include Ariana Fontana, Italian short track speed skater who reached 14 Olympic medals, more than anyone in the history of Italian sport. Federica Brignone won double gold in alpine skiing as did Francesca Lollobrigida in speed skating and Lizza Vitozzi won Italy’s first ever gold medal in the history of biathlon.
The medals this year are particularly interesting as they span across 10 different disciplines. The largest contributions were made by speed skating and alpine skiing which both brought in 5 medals each. Ice related events were responsible for a third of Italy’s medals in this year's games. Snowboarding secured three medals but no gold. Freestyle skiing brought the country 3 medals, one of each ranking. The luge brought a total of 4, 2 bronze and 2 gold.
Although Italy has had an incredible performance they have just missed the podium on the penultimate day of the games being overtaken by the Netherlands. Italy and the Netherlands are tied for 10 gold medals but the Netherlands 7 silvers to Italy’s 6 pushed them onto the podium. Italy has come third in total medals won only behind Norway’s 41 and the United States 33.
Overall an incredible performance for the country to be proud of for many years to come.
