Nuns run self-defence classes to stop violence against women

Maria Ausiliatrice Institute in Bibbiano

ROME – Nuns in Bibbiano, Reggio Emilia, are running self-defence classes throughout the month of November as part of an initiative for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Il Fatto Quotidiano reported.

The lessons run by the nuns of the Maria Ausiliatrice Institute in Bibbiano will take place on every Wednesday of the month and are free. Expert instructors will be leading the classes.

The nuns hope to help women and girls learn self-defence and how to manage in critical situations but also boost their self-esteem and body confidence.

Speaking to Il Fatto Quotidiano, the nuns explained that they “always keep an eye on social issues and the most vulnerable” and that it was for this reason that they wanted “to show sensitivity to women’s issues and start a programme that could be expanded on in the future.”
