Italian star skier Bassino breaks tibia in training

ROME – Italian skier, Marta Bassino, fractured her tibia during training and will most likely miss out on the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, the Italian Federation of Winter Sports (FISI) announced in a statement on Wednesday.
Bassino, 29, has seven World Cup victories and previously won gold at two different world championships. She was due to compete in the skiing World Cup 2025 circuit, ahead of the Olympic season next year.
The Piedmont skier was training in Val Senales, near Bolzano, in preparation for the World Cup giant slalom opening race on Saturday, when she slipped on a flat section of the course and broke her left tibia. Bassino is expected to be out for at least four months, said FISI, hampering her hopes of qualifying for the Olympics on home soil in Milan next year.
Italy’s female ski team ahead of the 2026 Olympics now seems to have further dwindled in strength, as Bassino is just one amongst several top Italian skiers, such as reigning world champion Federica Brignone, who are injured and practically ruled out of the 2025-26 ski season and thus the 2026 Olympics.
