Train hits three young adults in Piedmont leaving one dead

Trecate station

ROME – An Intercity train hit two people crossing the tracks of Trecate station in Piedmont on Monday evening, killing one and severely injuring the other, as well as leaving an onlooker injured, police said.

Reports from initial investigations say that an Intercity train travelling between Turin and Milan hit a person head on, killing them, at around 6 p.m. on Monday evening at Trecate station, around 55 miles northeast of Turin. A second person is believed to have also been struck by the train, leaving them in a critical condition. The pair were allegedly crossing the train tracks “without authorisation” to leave the station, instead of using the underpass.

The third person was reportedly not hit by the train but instead had rushed to help the other two and was struck by a rock or piece of iron from the tracks. This left them injured and in a state of shock. It is unknown if the third person knew the pair struck by the train. The two injured were taken to Maggiore Hospital in Novara.

The three people have not yet been identified; however, it is believed they are all around 20 years old and of foreign origin. It is believed that either they were not carrying documents at the time of the incident, or the documents were destroyed or lost during the incident.

The Ministry of Transport said that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Matteo Salvini, was “deeply saddened by the tragedy that took place in the province of Novara”, expressing “his deepest sympathy to the families involved.”

Investigations and identification attempts are ongoing.
