Italian actress Claudia Cardinale dies aged 87

ROME - The actress Claudia Cardinale has died at the age of 87. Her career lasted for almost more than 60 years. With more than 150 films, she crossed eras and cinematography, yet always keeping her personal aura intact.
Born in Tunisi on April 15, 1938, she was an icon of world cinema. She performed alongside legends such as John Wayne, Sean Connery, William Holden, Henry Fonda, Orson Welles, Anthony Quinn, Burt Lancaster, David Niven and Laurence Olivier, bringing with her an image of a free and determined woman, capable of confirming her independence both in life and on the screen, Il Fatto Quotidiano reports.
More than just artistic contribution, Claudia Cardinale was a symbol of modern feminism and proud, embodying the image of a free woman, strong willed, and aware of her own value. She challenged stereotypes and social conventions, building her own career in a world that often had relegated women to roles of secondary importance.
Her perfomances are unforgettable under the guidance of directors such as Mario Monicelli (I Soliti Ignoti), Luchino Visconti (Il Gattopardo), Federico Fellini (8½), Mauro Bolognini (Il Bell’Antonion, Senilita), Luigi Comencini (La Ragazza Di Bube, La Storia), Sergio Leono (C’era Una Volta Il West), Luigi Zampa (Bello, Onesto, Emigrato Australia Sposerebbe Compaesana Illibata) and Damiano Damiani (Il Giorno Della Civetta). Abroad, she collaborated with directors of international fame such as Abel Gance, Blake Edwards, Werner Herzog and Manoel de Oliviera.
During the course of her long professional life she received numerous awards: five David di Donatello awards, five Nastri d’Argento (Silver Ribbons), three Globi d’Oro (Italian Golden Globes), the Pasinetti alla Mostra di Venezia prize, a Grolla d’Oro (Golden Grole), and the Premio Barocco.
On an international level she revieved a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievment at the Venice Festival, a Golden Bear in Berlin, a Lumiere Award and many other awards that confirmed her artistic status. In 2011 the Los Angeles Times placed her among the top 50 most beautiful women in the history of cinema. Symbolic recognition of an appeal that has never known the passage of time.
