Giorgio Armani’s succession and style revolution: perspectives from Maria Cristina Rigano, Patrizia Vacalebri,Renata mollho
Rome – In a significant gathering organised by the Associazione della Stampa Estera in Italia (Foreign Press Association in Italy), leading figures in fashion journalism and academia came together to celebrate and reflect on the legacy of Giorgio Armani. The event, titled "Il Genio Italiano dell’Eleganza: Giorgio Armani, l’Uomo dietro l’Icona" (The Italian Genius of Elegance: Giorgio Armani, the Man Behind the Icon), featured in-depth discussions led by Maria Cristina Rigano, Patrizia Vacalebri and Renata Molho, all respected voices in the world of fashion and culture. The event was hosted under the auspices of DAM (Design, Artigianato, Moda), with coordination by Vera Naydenova, Mourad Rouighi and Niva Mirakyan.
Maria Cristina Rigano opened the conversation by analysing the complex dynamics of succession in luxury fashion houses, situating Giorgio Armani’s succession within a broader academic framework. She explored how fashion maisons face the challenge of maintaining brand identity after the loss of their founders, highlighting examples of both success and failure. Rigano emphasised the strategic foresight behind Armani’s choice to entrust the majority ownership to the Giorgio Armani Foundation, designed to preserve independence while preparing for measured collaboration with major luxury groups such as LVMH, EssilorLuxottica, and L’Oréal.
Patrizia Vacalebri provided detailed insight into the specifics of Armani’s succession plan, as revealed by the recently opened testament dated 9 September 2025. She explained how the Foundation now holds 90% of the Giorgio Armani Spa shares in bare ownership, while usufruct and voting rights are shared between Leo Dell’Orco—Armani’s longtime companion and key executive—his sister Rosanna, and the designer’s nieces and nephew. Vacalebri highlighted the critical role of Dell’Orco, who controls 40% of the voting rights, ensuring continuity and stability in governance. She also discussed the mandatory sale of shares to strategic partners within specific timeframes, or alternatively the possible listing of the company on the stock exchange, all carefully designed to safeguard Armani’s heritage.
Renata Molho, author of the acclaimed biography Essere Armani, added a deeply personal dimension to the event. Molho spoke candidly about her journey researching and writing the book, describing how Armani’s vision went beyond fashion to embody a philosophy of understated elegance and integrity. Her reflections illuminated the human story behind the brand, portraying Armani as a man of great discipline, resilience and subtlety—a quiet revolutionary who reshaped Italian and global fashion.
The three experts collectively highlighted Armani’s profound impact on fashion innovation. Maria Cristina Rigano focused on Armani’s stylistic revolution—his pioneering destrutturazione of traditional tailoring that removed rigid linings and shoulder pads to create fluid, comfortable, and elegant silhouettes. Patrizia Vacalebri elaborated on how this approach not only transformed menswear and womenswear but also inspired a generation of designers including Tom Ford, Pierpaolo Piccioli and Helmut Lang. Renata Molho underscored how Armani’s minimalism and emphasis on accessible luxury have become foundational elements in contemporary fashion.
Attention was also given to Armani’s strategic engagement with the Middle East. Maria Cristina Rigano outlined the brand’s expansion into this vital market, noting the success of boutiques in Dubai, Riyadh and Doha, as well as the iconic Armani Hotel in the Burj Khalifa. Patrizia Vacalebri discussed collaborations on luxury real estate projects such as the Armani Beach Residences in Ras Al Khaimah, and highlighted Armani’s participation in prominent regional fashion events like the Arab and Saudi Fashion Weeks. Renata Molho recounted Armani’s notable relationship with Queen Rania of Jordan, citing her elegant appearance in an Armani Privé gown at the 2010 Sanremo Festival as a symbol of the fusion between tradition and modernity.
Throughout the evening, Maria Cristina Rigano, Patrizia Vacalebri and Renata Molho emphasised the ethical vision left by Armani in his testament. They stressed his insistence on the Foundation managing the brand with integrity, moral correctness, and a commitment to innovation, quality and elegance. This, they agreed, would ensure that the Armani legacy continues to flourish without compromise.
The event closed with a shared sense of admiration for Giorgio Armani’s enduring influence—as a designer, entrepreneur and cultural icon. Thanks to the thoughtful presentations by Maria Cristina Rigano, Patrizia Vacalebri and Renata Molho, and the organisation of DAM and the Foreign Press Association, attendees were reminded not only of Armani’s timeless aesthetic but also of the strong human values that underpin it. His story remains a testament to visionary leadership and the power of Italian elegance on the world stage.
