Sinner dethroned in New York by relentless Alcaraz

ROME - There was nothing that Jannick Sinner could do, who after his historic win at Wimbledon, could not manage to secure the brace at the US Open, and lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final in four sets. 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 the scoreline, across just over two and a half hours of tennis, which saw the Spaniard in constant command of the game, with exception of the second set.
A final that further confirmed the unbelievably high level of both players. The Italian also lost his spot at the top of the ATP rankings: from Monday, indeed, it will be Carlos Alcaraz who will lead the classification.
Sinner has spent the past 65 weeks leading the way, with Alcaraz hot on heels the entire time, however it is now the Spaniard who finds himself at the top of the podium.
At the end of the match, before the presentation ceremony, Jannick Sinner spoke: “Congratulations to Carlos and his team, behind these performances there is a lot of hard work. Today he played better than me. Enjoy it, it is a huge moment. I thank again my team; we know how much support and dedication there is behind me.”
Then the Italian continued: “It was an incredible season; we have set foot on important stages and played in some great matches. I am happy to share this moment with you and with my family. Today I gave everything, and I couldn’t do any more.” Sinner went on to say that he was proud of how he had played and conducted himself throughout the tournament.
For Alcaraz it also marks his second career victory on the hard-court of Flushing Meadows after that of 2022.
The Spaniard – shortly before raising the silver trophy to the sky – declared: “I want to start with Jannick. It is incredible what you have been doing during the entire season. An extraordinary level in every single tournament that you play in. I see you more than my family (he said, laughing). It is beautiful to share the court and locker room, watching you try to improve day after day. Congratulations for all that you are doing. To my team and to my family: I am very fortunate to have you with me. The hard work I have behind me to improve as both a man and as a tennis player. Every goal and result that I achieve is also thanks to you. This tournament is special for me.”
