Giorgio Armani, maestro of Italian elegance, dies aged 91

Milan – Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer who redefined elegance and championed a uniquely Italian approach to fashion, has died aged 91. The Armani Group confirmed his passing on Thursday, stating he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
Often referred to with reverence as Il Signor Armani, the designer was hailed as a “tireless driving force” by his company, which described him as the heart and soul of a brand that became synonymous with refined, understated luxury.
“In this company, we have always felt like part of a family,” read a joint statement from Armani’s employees and family. “Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication.”
Armani's passing marks the end of an era in global fashion. Over five decades, he curated what many consider to be the quintessential Italian aesthetic clean lines, fluid tailoring, and a quiet sophistication that eschewed excess in favour of enduring style. His influence extended far beyond the catwalk, shaping not just what people wore but how they felt wearing it.
From power suits in the 1980s to the languid silhouettes of red carpet gowns, Armani brought a distinct elegance to both men's and women's wardrobes. He famously dressed Hollywood royalty, transforming the Oscars red carpet into a showcase of minimalist glamour. But at his core, Armani remained devoted to his roots.
“Elegance is not about being noticed, it’s about being remembered,” he once said epitomising both his design philosophy and his personal approach to fashion.
Armani remained a proud champion of Italian fashion, insisting on quality, craftsmanship, and local production throughout his career. He often spoke out against fleeting trends, believing true style lay in timeless design rooted in heritage.
“Italian style is not about shouting it’s about whispering with confidence,” he once remarked.
Though increasingly private in recent years, Armani remained closely involved in his company until the very end. In June 2025, he missed his runway show for the first time prompting concern about his health. Yet, according to a company statement, he continued to work behind the scenes, shaping collections and overseeing projects.
The brand later described him as “indefatigable to the end,” still immersed in his craft even in his final days.
