Loftus-Cheek leads AC Milan resurgence as McTominay's Napoli continue winning form

AC Milan's British midfielder opened the scoring for the Rossoneri

ROME – Game week 2 of the Serie A saw AS Roma continue their early season success with a closely fought victory away at Pisa, whilst the new boys on the block in Cremonese took another 3 points as they stunned Sassuolo at home. A quiet weekend for Napoli’s midfield maestro Scott McTominay, although Napoli still came away with 3 points after a last gasp winner against Cagliari. Instead, English midfielder Rueben Loftus-Cheek stole the limelight this week, scoring the opening goal for the Rossoneri on their away win against Lecce to return the Milan club to winning ways.

AS Roma remain in a good position in the table with their low scoring 1-0 win away from home in Pisa. Despite a reasonably convincing performance, the Giallorossi lacked a cutting edge to convert more of the chances they had created through dominating possession. In the end, a goal from Argentine forward Matías Soulé proved enough to take all three points back to the capital, and continue their positive start to the new campaign.

After shock defeat at the hands of high flying Cremonese last week, AC Milan bounced back with a convincing win against Lecce, thanks to a stellar performance from former Chelsea hotshot Rueben Loftus-Cheek. The Brit looked composed on the ball all game, and opened the scoring midway through the second half with a towering header to help his side to a comfortable 2-0 win to leave them 8th in the table. Christian Pulisic came off the bench to score the Rossoneri's second goal, and put any possibility of a Lecce comeback out of mind.

Napoli continued their strong start to the new campaign with a 1-0 home victory, leaving them second in the table. It was not, however, a comfortable win by any means. Despite controlling possession and creating plenty of chances, the Azzurri struggled to hit the target and break down the stubborn Cagliari defense, until Frank Anguissa broke the deadlock late into added time, with just 20 seconds to spare. Antonio Conte's side will need to be more clinical in front of goal over the next few months, however, especially with their European campaign beginning in a few weeks with a mammoth clash against Manchester City in the Champions League.

Lazio cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win at home over Hellas Verona, creating plenty of goalscoring opportunities in Rome. Again, it was another Argentine leading the charge for the Rome side. Taty Castellanos scored his sides third goal and assisted two more in a phenomenal performance at the Stadio Olimpico. A welcome three points after a disappointing loss to Como in the opening match.

Further North, newly promoted Cremonese continued to leave Serie A fans surprised as they upset Sassuolo with a 3-2 victory, keeping them hot on the heels of McTominay’s Napoli, although so early in the season it is hard to know if they can continue their unexpected run of form.

Another shock result up north saw Udinese beat Internazionale 2-1 away from home, with Frenchman Arthur Atta scoring what turned out to be the decisive goal in the 40th minute. The result helped Udinese leapfrog their opponents in the table, where they now sit 5th, one point ahead of Internazionale.

With the international break bringing a halt to league proceedings, fans will be praying that international duty doesn't bring too many injuries over the next few weeks.
