Benito Mussolini's great grandson ditches controversial surname from his shirt

Cremonese's new signing has chosen to wear 'Romano' on his shirt

CREMONA - One of the new faces in the Serie A for 2025/26 is Romano Floriani Mussolini, the latest signing for recently promoted Cremonese and the great grandson of Il Duce. A 22-year-old fullback, he was a key player in the Grigiorossi’s win against Sassuolo: firstly, the assist for Okereke’s ruled out goal, then he drew the foul for the penalty in the 92nd minute, converted by De Luca.

The goal gave all three points to the Lombardian club. Florian Mussolini has thus risen to the forefront of the national news for his actions on the pitch, after the controversies of the last few months about his surname.

Meanwhile, the son of Alessandra Mussolini decided – in his first experience of Serie A – to play with his baptismal name on his back. “Romano 22,” this will be the back of his shirt for the whole season. An attempt to dodge any discussions, as happened during his time at Juve Stabia, when instead he had chosen to play with the words “F. Mussolini” upon his back.

“So many things happened in such a short space of time,” explained Romano Floriani Mussolini in the post-match interview. “I will never forget this evening because I have dreamt of my debut in Serie A forever. The manager asked me to attack the depth and exploit the gaps, and I am happy to have managed that. Happy that in the end it went as it should have gone.”
