LGBTQ+ pilgrimage to take place for first time in Jubilee history

VATICAN CITY - In what is to be a symbolic moment for the Queer community, on Sept. 6, for the first time during a Jubilee, LGBTQ+ Catholics will take part in a pilgrimage to St Peter’s Basilica.

Organised by the association La Tenda di Gionata, the event is spiritual, not political, no rainbow flags or slogans, just prayer and reflection. Although not officially labelled as LGBTQ+, it appears in the Vatican’s Jubilee calendar.

The initiative reflects Pope Francis’ inclusive stance, though uncertainty remains under Pope Leo XIV. The pilgrimage has drawn criticism from conservative Catholics, but over 1,300 participants are expected, including clergy and activists.
