Italian Sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro dies aged 99

ROME - Arnaldo Pomodoro, the famous Italian sculptor, died on Sunday 22, in Milan at the age of 99 in his home, the Arnaldo Pomodoro foundation said.
The statement continued saying, “with the passing of Arnaldo Pomodoro, the art world loses one of its most authoritative, lucid and visionary voices. The Maestro leaves an immense legacy, not only for the strength of his work, recognized internationally, but also for the coherence and intensity of his thought, capable of looking to the future with tireless creative energy.”
One of Pomodoro’s most famous works was the Sphere within a Sphere and his pieces have been displayed throughout the world, most notably in the Vatican Museums, Trinity College, Dublin, the Museum of Contemporary art in Tehran and the University of Tel Aviv. He is also famous for having produced a controversial crucifix made of Fibre glass for a church in Milwaukee, in the United States.
Pomodoro was known for his great contributions to the contemporary art scene and his belief was that “the artist is part of a cultural tapestry; his active contribution can never be lacking.” Thus, he created his own foundation “as an active and living place of cultural development, as well as a documentation centre of [his] work, capable of making original proposals and not just passively conserving. But the best is yet to come: this was only a beginning and in [his] intentions the project - aimed at young people and the future - must take root, make continuity an unavoidable element.”
