Foreigners are more likely to be robbed than citizens but crime on the whole decreases, according to ISTAT

ROME - According to recently released reports regarding crimes against people and property from ISTAT, the Italian national office of statistics, crime is generally on the decline, in particular that against citizens, while those who are robbed are more likely to be foreign.

Between 2015 and 2023 people that were victims of burglaries and vehicle robberies decreased on the whole and the number of those robbed at their primary residence decreased by two thirds, from 1.8 to 0.6%. Theft of cars and trucks has gone from 1.5%to 0.7%, while for motorcycles and mopeds from 1.5 to 1.3%.

Citizens are statistically becoming safer from pick-pocketing and purse-snatching, dropping from 1.6% to 1%, while robberies in general went from 0.5% to 0.2%, attacks and threats. As is always the case, the chances of being the victim of one of these crimes are greater in large cities and at night. While the risks to non-citizens, is slightly higher, nevertheless it is not on the rise as a whole, as it is in London, for example, where the city saw a 40% rise in phone thefts alone since 2024, according to the Metropolitan Police.

On the other hand, online banking scams are more likely to affect where 3.3% of the population has been a victim of a scam versus 2.7% of people who do not have Italian citizenship.
