High school teacher attempts suicide following his suspension for comments about Meloni’s daughter

ROME – The teacher who made a Facebook post wishing the same fate as Martina Carbonaro, 14, who was killed by her ex-boyfriend, 19, in May, to the 8-year-old Ginevra, daughter of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has been named as Prof. Stefano Addeo, 65, who was German teacher at the 'Medio' high school in Cicciano, in Naples, according to the USR Campania
He was suspended following an investigation by the Department of Education, after the social media post was brought to the attention of the Government. Martina Carbonaro was the most victim of femicide in Italy and was brutally bludgeoned to death, causing outrage in the nation, including from Sig. Addeo. A note from the USR Campania stated that, "Today, in compliance with the procedure provided for by current legislation, the Regional School Office for Campania has started the disciplinary procedure against the teacher of the 'Media high school of Cicciano (NA), following what he published on his Facebook profile." However, in order to bring less disruption to the school community, his suspension was optional up until the disciplinary procedure.
Monday evening, following his discovery and subsequent suspension Addeo ended up in the hospital “after ingesting drugs and alcohol”, according to Fatto Quotidiano. He commented to the media that, "I did not hold up all the media furore that was against me. An hour ago, I tried suicide with a mix of psychotropic drugs. I made a mistake but I didn't have to be crucified in this way, they listened to me. I apologised, I didn't make it. It was a stupid gesture."
Minister of Education Giuseppe Valdirata, Lega, commented that "the figure of the teacher is of extraordinary importance in the formation of young people, not only in imparting knowledge but also in educating to respect for others. It is essential that the teachers are the first to always aware of the responsibility and social value of their role. We can no longer tolerate behaviours of individuals that on social networks or in public betray that decor and that dignity that must characterize such a delicate profession. of our school.”
The professor may yet have to answer for his post in court, as the prosecutor's office in Rome is waiting for further information.
