Augustinians celebrate the election of Pope Leo XIV

VATICAN CITY – The Augustinians of the Santa Monica International College, Rome which was known as the spiritual "home" of the new pontiff, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who since yesterday was Pope Leo XIV, were celebrating the stunning election of the first American pope, who was only made a cardinal in 2023.
Scenes at the college were described as full of ‘uncontainable joy’ with parishioners hugging one another and smiling. This was, of course, something that no one expected, all thought everyone in Santa Monica harboured hopes that it would be him nevertheless. The college is situated on Via Paolo VI, which is incredibly close to the balcony where the new pontiff has just appeared, so much so that he would lunch with the Augustinians, they said.
Father Luciano De Michieli, who knew Leo XIV said to il Messaggero that, "we are very happy for him and for the Church: we know his qualities. He was born in America but was open to the world, he did a lot for South America, Asia and Africa. He will truly be a bridge capable of reaching everyone. A true gift for the Church".
Father Ian, a Scottish Augustinian struggled to express himself in this incredible moment of shock and excitement said, "he is a friend, a good person. I also met his parents. We have known each other since 1981, when he came to study canon law here. He grew up in this church: for us Augustinians it is a great honour. I am sure that he will continue the work of Francis and then follow his path. We will pray for him, his is not an easy mission".
American students all over the city have been celebrating the election of this new American pope, with many expressing their elation to various news outlets.
