White smoke indicates cardinals have elected new pope

VATICAN CITY -- White smoke belched out of the Sistine Chapel chimney and the bells of St Peter's Basilica rang out Thursday signalling that cardinals had elected a new pope on the fourth vote of their Conclave, witnesses said.

The new pontiff was expected to appear on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica up to an hour after the smoke signal after he accepted the election to St Peter's throne, received congratulations from the other cardinal electors and told them the name he had chosen to use.

Bands from the Vatican Gendarmerie and the Italian Carabinieri entertained crowds of thousands of faithful and tourists gathered in St Peter's Square as the throng awaited the appearance of the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
