American citizen impales himself on Colosseum fence

ROME – Police were investigating Monday the case of an American citizen, 47, who accidentally impaled himself on one of the Colosseum fences, while attempting to climb over it.
The victim was a 47-year-old American citizen and a Taiwanese resident, who arrived in the capital a few days earlier with friends and family and was staying in a guesthouse in the historic centre. For disclosed reasons, he climbed onto the sharp fence and was immediately impaled. According to passers-by there was a sharp scream and then the man lost consciousness. This incident occurred on 2 May, around 5:00 pm, according to Il Messaggero, and resulted in the man being rushed to hospital by authories immediately afterwards.
People in the vicinity immediately called for help and then the Carabinieri, the Financal Police team and an ambulance arrived on the scene. The man had been stabbed deeply in the lower back, which prevented him from moving. The rescuers intervened by administering sedatives to make the rescue possible. They stabilized him on the spot by applying a compressive bandage to the wound to stop the onset of bleeding. Then, lying on a stretcher, the tourist was immediately taken to San Giovanni under a code red code, where he underwent surgery. The wound was closed with over 80 stitches and on Sunday night he was declared out of danger.
He is due to be questioned by the Carabinieri to provide his version of events but it is not excluded that the ill-fated move was based on the desire to observe the Colosseum more closely. The man's friends, when questioned by the investigators, did not provide useful details to clarify his reason for scaling the pointy metal fence.
