Bandits flee with 4 million euros after setting afire two armed vehicles

ROME- Saturday evening,  a gang of some10 bandits sped away in stolen vehicles with 4 million euros in black bags, police said. They left chaos in their wake after setting two armed cars, originally headed to the Grosseto vault, on fire.

The crime took place on the Variante Aurelia road in the San Vincenzo area. Two vehicles from the Battistolli company were transporting 4 million euros to the Grosseto vault. Around 6:30pm, the bandits used two vans to block in the security vehicles near the San Carlo tunnel. The bandits fired roughly 20 shots into the air with rifles to intimidate and force the 5 security guards to exit the vehicles, thus allowing them to steal the money.

The bandits loaded the money onto three grey SUV’s, two Volvos, and a Volkswagen. It is believed the thieves then lit both Battistolli vehicles on fire to ensure an easy escape. The thieves disappeared from the scene, heading south.

The bandits are presumed to be from Sardinia, after video footage captured them speaking with Sardinian accents.

The Livorno Prosecution office has opened an investigation to find the bandits.
