English woman stabbed in broad daylight in Rome city centre in attempted robbery

ROME – A 50-year-old English woman, who was also a resident of Rome, was stabbed three times in broad daylight on Via Nazionale, a street in the very heart of Rome, in an attempted robbery, say police sources.

On Tuesday afternoon the 50-year-old business woman had just left a pharmacy on Via Nazionale, when a man suddenly grabbed her from behind. When he was met with some resistance, he then proceeded to stab her three times.

According to a report in Italian newspaper il Messaggero, the woman reported the incident after she was treated on the spot by 118 as thankfully, she only had superficial wounds on both an arm and a leg. The attacker then fled the scene empty handed.

The details of the attacker were not clear as he was wearing a hat with a visor and sunglasses. According to the victim, he spoke fluent Italian without any clear dialectical inflections.

“He wanted my bag. I reacted and then he stabbed me with a knife,” said the victim. Due to the attack taking place in broad daylight both passers-by and the doorman of a nearby building immediately came to her aid, as she stood there in shock, covered in blood. Nearby military intervened and collected her initial testimony.

The incident remains a shock to the community as Rome is one of Europe’s safer capital cities, where incidents of this nature are not frequent occurrences. No arrests have been made so far in this case but the police are on the look out for the attacker.
